The Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Programme offers selected filmmakers the opportunity to gain international experience and forge industry contacts. It brings together artists and film professionals from Berlin-Brandenburg and partner countries.

The stay in Berlin is organised by the Nipkow-Programm, which also oversees the curriculum of each of the selected residents of the 7 Medienboard Berlin Brandenurg (MBB) funded programmes. The residencies work on a reciprocal basis with Hong Kong, Israel, Mexico, Toronto and Paris and are one directional with Mumbai and Palestine. The residency covers the travel costs (one economy return trip), accommodation, a monthly allowance and professional support while in Berlin or in the partner country.

The Berlin - Guanajuato artist-in-residence programme enables a filmmaker from Berlin-Brandenburg to live and work for two months in Guanajuato (Mexico). In return, a filmmaker from Guanajuato comes to Berlin for three months. In this way, both receive a unique opportunity to develop their skills and become familiar with the other country’s film industry. The filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg will have the unique opportunity to get to know Guanajuato and thus Mexico in all its many facets, and will gain insight into the country’s media and film scene. The programme is oriented toward the needs of the fellowship recipients. Representatives of Guanajuato’s film and media industry and cultural institutions are available to serve as mentors. The stay is organized by the Guanajuato International Film Festival, and is supported by the Goethe Institute Mexico. The fellowship covers travel costs and accommodation, and additionally provides a monthly cash allowance.

Berlin – Paris (France) - 3 months AiR

The artist-in-residence programme with the City of Paris offers a filmmaker from Berlin a three-month fellowship in Paris (April/May/June 2019). The aim is to help the resident gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes an allowance of €1,296 per month, as well as accommodation in the Cité des Arts, which the participant will rent for a monthly rate of €451. In addition, fellows will receive professional support in networking within the local film industry. This is an initiative of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Institut Français Deutschland and the City of Paris.

Berlin – Rome (Italy) - 3 months AiR

The artist-in-residence programme with the City of Rome offers a filmmaker from Berlin a three-month fellowship in Rome (April/May/June 2019). The aim is to help the resident gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes an allowance of €1,000 per month, as well as accommodation. In addition, fellows will receive professional support in networking within the local film industry. This is an initiative of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

Berlin - Tel Aviv (Israel) - 3 months AiR

The MBB residency programme with Tel Aviv started in 2009. In cooperation with the Israel Film Fund, the Medienboard offers a German filmmaker a three-month fellowship in Tel Aviv. In return, a filmmaker from Israel comes to Berlin for three months. Here too, the object is to gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes travel expenses and accommodation, as well as a cash allowance of € 1,000 per month. In addition, fellows will receive professional support in networking within the local film industry. The Berlin residence of the filmmaker from Israel is organised by the Nipkow Programm and is supported by the Medienboard and the Gesellschaft zur Wahrnehmung von Film- und Fernsehrechten mbH (GWFF).

The partner in Israel is the Israel Film Fund.

Berlin - Hongkong - 3 Months AIR

2018 gibt das Artist-in-Residence Programm “Berlin –- Hongkong” einem Filmschaffenden aus Berlin-Brandenburg die Chance, drei Monate in Hongkong zu leben und zu arbeiten und andererseits einem Filmemacher aus Hongkong die Möglichkeit, für drei Monate nach Berlin zu kommen. Beide bekommen so eine einmalige Gelegenheit, ihre Fähigkeiten weiterzuentwickeln und die jeweils andere Filmwirtschaft kennenzulernen. Der Filmemacher aus Berlin-Brandenburg wird die einmalige Gelegenheit haben, die Metropole kennenzulernen und tiefe Einblicke in die Produktionslandschaft der Film- und Medienbranche Hongkongs zu bekommen. Das Programm wird auf die Bedürfnisse des Stipendiaten ausgerichtet. Vertreter der Film- und Medienbranche Hongkongs und kultureller Institutionen werden als Paten für das Programm und den Stipendiaten zur Verfügung stehen. Das Goethe-Institut Hongkong wird mit Unterstützung des Hong Kong International Film Festival den Aufenthalt organisieren und das Programm planen und durchführen. Das Stipendium umfasst Reisekosten, Unterkunft und ein Taschengeld in Höhe von 1.000 Euro pro Monat.

The Berlin – Toronto (Toronto International Film Festival - TIFF) artist-in-residence program enables a filmmaker from Berlin-Brandenburg to live and work for three months in Toronto, Canada. In return, a Canadian filmmaker selected by TIFF comes to Berlin for two months. In this way, both receive a unique opportunity to develop their skills and become familiar with the other country’s film industry. The filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg will have the unique opportunity to get to know Toronto in all its many facets, and will gain insight into the country’s media and film scene. The programme is oriented toward the needs of the fellowship recipients. Representatives of Toronto's film and media industry and cultural institutions are available to serve as mentors. The stay is organized by the Toronto International Film Festival. The fellowship covers travel costs and accommodation, and additionally provides a monthly cash allowance.
